“City Hall is putting its commitments to New York tenants in the city’s ledger”
NEW YORK, NY – In response to the announcement of Mayor Mamdani’s executive budget, NYS Tenant Bloc Director Sumathy Kumar released the following statement:
“City Hall is putting its commitments to New York tenants in the city’s ledger. This budget contains billions of dollars of new capital investment in housing that can and should be used to take buildings away from negligent landlords. Too many of our homes are being used as piggy banks for real estate executives instead of quality housing for New Yorkers.
“Through organizing, New Yorkers put pressure on the State to help the City fill its budget gap, but we need more. When one in four New Yorkers are struggling to afford the basics as rents and other costs rise, we need the state to step up to raise taxes on the wealthy and fully fund rental assistance through the Housing Access Voucher Program. The Governor has the power and responsibility to take action to ensure all New Yorkers have a stable home.”

The NYS Tenant Bloc is organizing tenants from our homes to the ballot box to take power from the real estate industry. Tenants are half the state: united we could take control over our homes and democracy.
